Fiumicino to Civitavecchia Port: €130 Taxi, Transfer, Train

Civitavecchia, about 60 km up the coast from Fiumicino, is the cruise port for Rome. Roma Capitale, which also sets Rome's airport taxi fares, fixes the fare between Fiumicino Airport and the port at €130 per car, with every supplement included. The drive takes about an hour and a half.

Official taxi from the airport

At the Fiumicino rank, ask a Rome taxi for the fixed fare to the Civitavecchia cruise terminal before you set off. Rome's taxis are white with the city's symbol on the front doors. Taxis licensed by the town of Fiumicino use a separate stand and charge more for the same run, so check the doors before you get in.

Getting back from the port

Under Italian law a taxi picks up passengers in the area of the town that licensed it (Law 21/1992, article 2). At the port you will be taking a Civitavecchia taxi, and Rome's fixed list does not bind it, so agree the price before the bags go in. On disembarkation morning, when several thousand passengers can come ashore within a few hours, a car booked in advance saves the wait.

Pre-booked transfer

A private transfer from Fiumicino to the port was quoted at €175 for a sedan, for a mid-October afternoon. On the same day, cars from the port back to Fiumicino or into central Rome were quoted a little higher. On the way to the port, the driver tracks your flight and meets you at arrivals.

Train and port shuttles

There is no direct train between the airport and the port. Take the train into Rome first, then a regional train on the Civitavecchia line, and allow about two hours with the change. Inside the port a free Port Mobility bus links the cruise berths with the Largo della Pace gate, and on ship days a cruise shuttle runs between the berths and the railway station for €6 each way.

Into Rome for the day?

If your ship only calls at Civitavecchia, the regional train is the cheap way into Rome: get off at San Pietro for the Vatican or stay on to Termini. We found no fixed taxi fare from the port into Rome: a Civitavecchia taxi charges its own tariff, so ask for the price before you set off.

Which should you choose?

On embarkation day, the €130 Rome taxi from Fiumicino is the best value for up to four people with luggage. Book a transfer if you land late, travel as a bigger group or want the car waiting. On the way back, book ahead; the train is the cheapest option if you can manage your bags on two trains.
