This guide compares four towns in central Cappadocia: Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp and Avanos. All four are in Nevşehir province and close together, so any of them works as a base. What differs is the drive from the airport, how near you are to the sights you came for and how big a town you want around you in the evening. This guide sets the four side by side using official sources and our own airport fare data.

Göreme: next to the Open-Air Museum

Göreme is the town beside the Göreme Open-Air Museum, 10 km from Nevşehir, and its municipality describes it as the centre of the Nevşehir, Ürgüp and Avanos triangle. Balloons fly over the valleys around it, and Voyager Balloons, for one, says its flights take off near Göreme town. In English searches it is the town people look for most. "Goreme hotels" gets about 740 searches a month in the US and the UK combined, against about 40 for Ürgüp hotels and 20 for Uçhisar hotels (SE Ranking, October 2026).

From Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV) Göreme is 38 km by road. A taxi on the official meter costs about €45.3 (₺2,522), and a pre-booked transfer is €15–25. From Kayseri Airport (ASR) it is 75 km and about €88.9 (₺4,950) by taxi.

Uçhisar: the highest viewpoint

Uçhisar is built around Uçhisar Castle, a rock outcrop that the Cappadocia Area Presidency calls the highest point in Cappadocia and its most striking viewing terrace. The town is 5 km from the centre of Nevşehir and a short drive from Göreme. Pick it if a view from the hotel matters more to you than being able to walk to the Open-Air Museum.

Ürgüp: the largest town

Ürgüp is the largest district in Nevşehir province and, in its municipality's words, the most important tourism centre in Cappadocia. The town lies at 1,060 m above sea level. From NAV it is 48 km, about €57 (₺3,172) by taxi or €18–30 by pre-booked transfer. Avanos is 19 km away and Nevşehir 21 km, by the highway authority's district distance table.

Avanos: the pottery town on the river

The Kızılırmak river runs through the middle of Avanos, splitting the town in two, its municipality says. The Cappadocia Area Presidency notes that clay from the old riverbeds made Avanos a centre of pottery going back to the Hittites. It is 18 km from Nevşehir and 19 km from Ürgüp by road, and suits travellers who would like a riverside town.

What the sights cost: official 2026 entrance fees

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism sets these prices for foreign visitors, in euros:

SitePrice
Göreme Open-Air Museum€20
Dark Church, inside the Göreme Open-Air Museum€6 extra
Zelve and Paşabağ (one ticket for both)€12
Kaymaklı Underground City€13
Derinkuyu Underground City€13
Ihlara Valley (Aksaray)€15
Museum Pass Cappadocia, 3 days, Nevşehir and Aksaray sites€65, rising to €75 on 1 April 2027

Göreme, Zelve and Paşabağ, both underground cities and Ihlara come to €73 with single tickets, so the €65 pass pays off if you visit all five within three days. Göreme is the town nearest the Open-Air Museum, and Zelve and Paşabağ are on the road between Göreme and Avanos. Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu lie south of Nevşehir, a drive from any of the four towns.

Getting there from the airports

Cappadocia has two airports. Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV) is 30 km from Nevşehir, according to the airport authority, and a shuttle run by İpek Tur meets the scheduled flights; taxis and rental cars are also at the terminal. Kayseri (ASR) is further away: 75 km from Göreme against 38 km from NAV. Our Nevşehir airport guide and Kayseri airport guide compare the taxi fare on the official meter with fixed-price transfers to each town.

Planning around a balloon flight

If a balloon flight is the reason for the trip, book it for your first morning so a weather cancellation still leaves time to fly on another day. Our balloon prices page lists what operators charge and how many days the balloons flew last season.
